Slovakia: trade-tested workers, with the permit steps set out first

We test the trade before we file. This page sets out how Slovakia's permit steps fit around that test.

RRI starts with the trade, not the paperwork. A worker who fails a trade test on site costs an employer more than a file that waits a few extra days, so we test first and file second.

Who can be employed, and under which permit

A Slovak employer may engage a third-country national only when that person holds a work permit and a temporary residence permit for employment. The Labour Office grants the work permit on the employer's written request. The Police Department grants the residence permit. Neither is automatic, and the route requires the employer to have a registered office in Slovakia.

The timeline the law describes

The procedure streamlined in July 2024 sets fixed decision windows. The employer can ask to fill a vacancy 20 working days after reporting it. The Labour Office decides within 15 working days. The Police Department normally decides within 60 days (OECD, International Migration Outlook 2025). These are the law's windows, not our promise. Your start date depends on the decisions.

Our trade test and the Pakistan side

Each trade is tested against the list the employer filed. Where a trade needs one, we run the NAVTTC-approved trade test. We also handle medicals, BEOE protectorate clearance, PakSoftSkills registration and police clearance. Candidates who fail a medical or a test are replaced at no sourcing fee.

Seasonal hospitality and farm roles

From January 2025, Slovakia offers a seasonal work contract of up to 520 hours a year, with reduced social contributions. The seasonal scope now covers all hospitality jobs, including restaurants and hotels (OECD). We confirm each seasonal role's route before we recruit for it.

What we need from you

What changed in July 2026

From 15 July 2026, amendments to the Foreign Residence Act and the Employment Services Act tie a worker on a national visa to the position their work authorisation was first granted for. Where a residence renewal is pending, the employer may keep the worker in that position, until 15 July 2027 in the cases the summary describes.

The source is a law-firm summary, not the statute. RRI confirms the transitional wording with the Ministry before any file relies on it.

Questions employers ask

How long does a Slovak file take?

The statutory decisions have set windows, but the total time depends on the vacancy steps and on the workers' documents. We will not give a date before the Labour Office has decided.

Is there a sourcing fee?

No. Sourcing and screening are not billed to the employer.

Can we start from a trade list alone?

You can, but we will reply with questions before giving a start date. Send the trade names used in the filing.
